The restoration of the 8,750 hectare Wetlands is a project of national scientific significance and is the largest wetland restoration project in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Victorian Minister for Environment and Climate Change appointed the Winton Wetlands Committee of Management Inc. in April 2009 as an incorporated committee of management under the Crown Land (Reserves) Act 1978.  Committee members are selected through a public expression of interest process and are appointed based on their skills and experience.

Guiding Principles

  • To lead with accountability and good governance.
  • To balance environmental and economic imperatives.
  • To be community facing in all our decisions.
  • To maintain strong, mutually rewarding partnerships.

To deliver a sustainable tourism and recreational asset that renews our wellbeing, our community, our economy and our environment.

To renew the Wetlands in reference to the FLUS, growing its natural, scientific, cultural and environmental significance while delivering economic, social, educational and research opportunities.

The Wetlands is a tourism enterprise based on natural, social and economic renewal. It tells the stories of our relationship with this magnificent landscape throughout history.

As set out in the 2013/16 Strategic Plan the Committee aims to achieve this by;

  • Building visitation
  • Renewing the environment
  • Growing our partnerships
  • Embracing our community
  • Sharing our stories
  • Setting the scene for stage 2
